Pakistan won the ICC Champions Trophy, under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed, on this day, June 18, in 2017.
The Men in Green defeated India in the final at The Oval by 180 runs to win their first-ever Champions Trophy title.
After being asked to bat first by India, Pakistan posted a daunting total of 338-4. Opener Fakhar Zaman was the star of the show for Pakistan after scoring 114 runs in 106 balls. His impressive knock included 12 fours and three sixes. The left-hander got a reprieve, when he had only scored three runs, after he edged one to MS Dhoni behind the stumps on the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah but it was declared a no-ball as the pacer had stepped over the line.
Azhar Ali (59 off 71) and Mohammad Hafeez (unbeaten 57 off 37) were the other valuable contributors for Pakistan.
While chasing the target, India were dismissed for 158 runs in 30.3 overs with all-rounder Hardik Pandya being the only batter who offered some resistance with a brisk knock of 76 runs in 43 balls.
Pacer Mohammad Amir rocked India’s top-order with wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan.
Hasan Ali also claimed three wickets, including the prized scalp of MS Dhoni.
Zaman was declared player of the match, meanwhile Hasan bagged the player of the tournament award after clinching 13 wickets in five innings.
It must be noted that Pakistan lost their first match of the event against India by 124 runs but bounced back to win four matches in a row and lift the trophy.
"After the India [group] match I said to my boys, the tournament is not finished yet. We played very well and now we have won the final,” Ahmed said after the match.
“He [Fakhar Zaman] is a great impact player, in his first ICC event, he played like a champion, he can be a great player for Pakistan.
“All credit goes to my bowlers, Amir, Hasan Ali, Shadab, Junaid, Hafeez, they bowled really well.
“It's a young team, credit goes to my boys, this tournament can be a great booster for us. We played like we had nothing to lose, now we are champions. It's a very proud moment for me and my country, and thanks to the nation for supporting us."
